Central Coast Instrufest 2024: A Resounding Debut

From October 8 to 12, the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music hosted the very first Central Coast Instrufest – a five-day competitive music festival that filled Gosford’s Robert Knox Hall with the sounds of piano, strings, voice, and more.

Designed as a platform for emerging talent, the event brought together over 100 young and amateur musicians aged five and up for a joyful celebration of live performance, community, and musical growth.

A Festival of Firsts

Launched during the October school holidays and supported by Central Coast Council, Instrufest offered five themed competition days: Piano (Tuesday), Vocal (Wednesday), Woodwind and Brass (Thursday), Strings (Friday), and Guitar & Percussion (Saturday). Each day featured age-based sections with multiple sessions, giving performers an opportunity to share their music in a professional concert setting.

The event was inclusive by design – welcoming beginner performers alongside more experienced musicians – and covered a wide range of genres, from classical repertoire to musical theatre, contemporary songs, and electric guitar solos. Many students performed in public for the very first time, supported by family, friends, and an enthusiastic local audience.

Expert Guidance and Inspiration

Competitors were evaluated by a panel of distinguished adjudicators, each bringing deep expertise to their respective fields.

Pianists were judged by Erin Sweetman, a seasoned concert performer and festival artist. The vocal category was overseen by Alex Sefton, an operatic baritone with Opera Australia. For the woodwind and brass events, Dr Alana Blackburn – a nationally renowned recorder player and ensemble director – offered valuable critique and encouragement. Additional adjudication support for strings and guitar categories came from experienced Conservatorium faculty members.

The festival placed strong emphasis not only on technical ability but also on musicality, interpretation, stage presence, and confidence. All participants received feedback designed to foster growth and inspire continued practice.

Standout Moments and a Bright Future

The week concluded with the Grand Final Showcase Concert on Saturday 12 October, where selected standout performers from all categories took the stage one more time. The concert was a highlight reel of the festival’s finest moments – a culmination of effort, nerves, and passion.

Among the top award recipients were Charlie Schoeman, who impressed judges with his dynamic acoustic guitar performance of “Jongo” by Paulo Bellinati; Hechter Caleb Saturno, who performed the final movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata with polish and poise; and Ruby Williams, whose heartfelt rendition of Part of Your World earned her junior vocal honors. Sebastian Lee (cello) and Jensen Hornsby (electric guitar) were also recognized for their compelling performances.

Central Coast Instrufest was more than just a competition. It was a shared experience – one that brought together performers, parents, teachers, and the broader community in support of music education and self-expression. As Conservatorium CEO Lisa Barnes noted, “This event brought the community together to celebrate music and quality music education – exactly what we’re all about.”

Looking Ahead

With its successful debut behind it, Central Coast Instrufest is already building momentum for a return later this year. Organisers are aiming to grow the program, expand participation, and continue offering a stage for local musical talent.

Stay tuned for updates on the next Instrufest, including registration details, categories, and performance dates. Whether you’re a returning performer or a first-time participant, the next chapter of this festival promises to be even more exciting.
